Greetings, my name is Josh. I am half Italian and proud of it. Because of this, I am also known as "Linguini" around school. I am a full time student at John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Arkansas.
This blog was originally created for my freshman Honors Orientation class. The title was a reference to the common saying referring to not getting enough sleep, which originated from a quote by Edna St. Vincent Millay.
My candle burns at both ends it will not last the night;
But ah, my foes, and oh, my friends - It gives a lovely light.
However, I’ve discovered a better quote mentioning candles in Psalm 18:25-30. Well, when I first came across it it said “candle” (it was the KJV). However, most versions say “lamp” and there were some unusual old-English words in the KJV, so I am going to use the more modern version of ESV instead.
With the merciful you show yourself merciful;
with the blameless man you show yourself blameless;
with the purified you show yourself pure;
and with the crooked you make yourself seem tortuous.
For you save a humble people,
but the haughty eyes you bring down.
For it is you who light my lamp [(or) candle];
the LORD my God lightens my darkness.
For by you I can run against a troop,
and by my God I can leap over a wall.
This God—his way is perfect;
the word of the LORD proves true;
he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him.
with the purified you show yourself pure;
and with the crooked you make yourself seem tortuous.
For you save a humble people,
but the haughty eyes you bring down.
For it is you who light my lamp [(or) candle];
the LORD my God lightens my darkness.
For by you I can run against a troop,
and by my God I can leap over a wall.
This God—his way is perfect;
the word of the LORD proves true;
he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him.
So, my title shall now be a witness, not to the weak, ineffective efforts I make to keep my candle burning on both ends, but to the God who both lit the candle and keeps it intact and aflame.
